In celebration of Earth Day 2010, the City of Lakewood will again present its Sustainability Awards to projects and initiatives in the city, and economic sustainability and community engagement have been added as ways for projects to win an award. The deadline for the award nominations is March 5.
The Community Sustainability Award, Defender of the Planet Award (for youth) and Eco-Employee Award for City of Lakewood Employees are the three categories in which awards will be given. Businesses, nonprofits, community organizations, individuals and schools in Lakewood are eligible to receive awards. Nomination forms and additional information can be found online at www.Lakewood.org/green.
Lakewood established the Sustainability Awards three years ago to further the goals outlined in its Comprehensive Plan by recognizing those members of the community who are leading the way to a more sustainable future. The Comprehensive Plan, which outlines the community's vision for Lakewood, defines community sustainability as "the process of creating balance among the environment, the economy and society to ensure that practices and decisions do not compromise the quality of life for future generations."
Applicants will be evaluated on achievement in one or more of the following areas: climate change, innovation in environmental technology, preservation of ecology and biodiversity, green design, waste reduction and recycling. New this year are the additional areas of achievement in community engagement and economic sustainability. Applicants also must meet the goals of the Lakewood Comprehensive Plan, have a positive impact, and embrace innovation.
Completed applications can be sent by email or mailed to Sustainability Awards, Office of Economic Development and Sustainability, 480 S. Allison Parkway, Lakewood, CO 80226-3127.
